Re-engineering: This congregation is generally fairly able to pay its bills and to get by from week to week. It can fill most places of leadership, but several people have numerous roles in church life. Worship attendance growth is often flat and perhaps even declining. In this situation, coaching is put in place to help identify obstacles and create a plan for overcoming these obstacles.

Re-launching: Congregations in this place have dwindled to the point that it cannot pay its bills; it cannot staff key positions (e.g. children, youth, music); it has real difficulty attracting new people; it cannot hire a pastor (or keep one if they currently have a pastor); and the church is considering closing down if something doesn’t happen soon. Churches in this category who meet certain conditions may be eligible for a complete new start to the church, reversing the life-cycle before death occurs.
